Man is arrested on auto insurance fraud charges

A man who claimed his truck was stolen from a restaurant in Fontana was arrested April 27 for allegedly committing auto insurance fraud, according to the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office.

Ruben Colunga, 37, of San Bernardino was taken into custody by San Bernardino police officers for an outstanding arrest warrant on felony insurance fraud charges.

Colunga was interviewed by investigators from the D.A.’s Auto Insurance Fraud Unit and transported to the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Central Detention Center, where he was booked for the $50,000 warrant.

The arrest warrant stemmed from an insurance claim filed in June 2010, where Colunga called Progressive Insurance and claimed his 2006 Dodge Ram 3500 pick-up truck was stolen from a restaurant in Fontana. During the claims process, Colunga advised the insurance company he purchased the “used” vehicle for $20,000; however, the Sales and DMV documents indicate Colunga purchased the vehicle at a reduced cost, “As Is,” because at the time of the purchase, the vehicle was not operable.

Following the claim, authorities conducted an investigation and determined Colunga’s insurance claim was inaccurate and misleading. Investigators believe Colunga lied to the insurance company to be overcompensated for the insurance claim.
