Small Violations With a Big Impact on Car Insurance Costs

Car insurance rates can be a mysterious thing. Each insurance company uses its own formula to decide how much to charge you for coverage.

But one fact is almost universally true: the more responsibly you drive, the lower your rates will be.

“Your driving record is one of the key rate-setting criteria auto insurers employ,” says Michael Berry, spokesperson for the Insurance Information Institute.

Everybody knows that major violations such as DUIs and speeding tickets cause

Robert Passmore, senior director of personal lines for the Property Casualty Insurers Association of America, says even minor offenses “certainly paint a picture of carelessness” that can cause you to pay more, particularly when they are combined with a record of more serious moving violations. Getting divorced? Review your life insurance for potential changes

Going through divorce negotiations can be very tricky, even if your divorce is a friendly one. In addition to the division of property, determining custody for children and finding new living arrangements, you might also need to review any life insurance policies you have.

How to avoid hospital bills from doctors that don’t take insurance

Marissa Dennis had a relatively uneventful labor and recovery when her son was born at a New York City hospital in 2008. So she and her husband were taken aback when they received a bill for more than $800 for the handful of routine check-ins they received from the on-call pediatrician.

Such stressful surprises aren’t unusual in medical care today, billing experts say. Doctors who have privileges at hospitals typically aren’t employees and aren’t obligated to accept the same insurance the hospitals do. Often, functions like anesthesia, radiology, pathology or emergency room services are provided via contracts with a single large group that accepts little or no insurance because they prefer not to settle for the discounted payments that insurance companies routinely negotiate. Chiropractors among 11 charged in insurance fraud case

Authorities in New Jersey have charged 11 people, including three chiropractors, in connection with an insurance fraud case.

According to Attorney General Paula Dow’s office, the accused were involved in two separate schemes which used “runners” to recruit patients to the chiropractors’ practices.

According to investigators, the chiropractors used runners to identify and contact individuals who had recently been involved in motor vehicle accidents. The runners would then recruit those individuals to undergo chiropractic treatment. The chiropractors paid the runners money for recruiting patients to their practices. The recruitment of patients by the runners, and the subsequent treatment, enabled the chiropractors to file claims for payment from multiple insurance companies. Read the rest of this entry »
