Couple charged with insurance fraud after vehicle pulled from Dam B

JASPER COUNTY – by Steve W. Stewart/KJAS – A Jasper area couple has been arrested and charged with insurance fraud after investigators say they pushed their vehicle off of a bridge and into Dam B, and then falsely reported it as stolen.

According to Captain Bob Walker of the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department, evidence in the case led to the arrest of 25-year-old Dusty Ray Letney, and his wife, 24-year-old Stephanie Marie Letney. The couple was arrested late last week, and charged with insurance fraud. Both were released from jail on $20,000.00 bonds on Saturday.

According to Walker, it all began on the afternoon of Sunday, July 10th, when deputies responded to a report of the 2008 Mazda Rav being stolen from the Bevilport boat ramp at the Angelina River. Walker said that Stephanie Letney told deputies that she and her children were swimming in the river, when someone stole her van.

Walker said at about 10:00 that evening, a woman drove across the Sandy Creek low water bridge where Sandy Creek flows into Dam B, and noticed two lights glowing under the water. Walker said Emergency Corps President Billy Williford and Game Warden Justin Eddins went into the water and confirmed that it was the vehicle that was reported stolen earlier in the day.

Williford and Eddins assisted a crew from Jasper Towing & Recovery with pulling the completely submerged vehicle out of the lake, which took several hours.

According to Sheriff Mitchel Newman, it appeared that the van’s transmission was placed in neutral, and it was pushed into the water. Newman said the van floated about 150 yards away from the bridge before it sank in water that was about 5 feet deep
