Charlotte woman arrested on insurance fraud charges

A Charlotte woman has been charged with six counts of insurance fraud after she allegedly filed six altered disability claims with Aflac Insurance, the N.C. insurance department announced this morning.

Department investigators arrested Crystal Beasley Walker, 39, on Friday, alleging that between March and December 2009, she filed six altered or fraudulent “Continuation of Disability” claims with the insurance company. She was paid an undisclosed amount of money, the department said.

Walker is under an $8,500 secured bond.

Aflac’s special investigations unit alerted the N.C. department of the possible fraud claims and an inquiry was launched by the department’s criminal investigations division.

The insurance department employs 20 sworn law enforcement officers focused on investigating claims of insurance fraud. Last year, the division closed 402 cases and made 126 arrests that led to 88 criminal convictions. Those convictions resulted in more than $2.1 million in restitution and recover, the department said.
