Bartlett woman sentenced to 10 years for insurance fraud

Bridgette Buckner, 50, of 537 Rose Lane, Bartlett, was sentenced in absentia to 10 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections for stealing $25,000 from her former employer through an elaborate insurance fraud scheme, according to DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin.

On June 30, Buckner pled guilty to two counts of Insurance fraud — a class 2 felony — and one count of wire fraud — a class 3 felony — in front of Judge John Kinsella, who handed down today’s sentence.
On April 30, 2008, Buckner, an employee at Hallmark Services Corp., filed a claim against a $10,000 life insurance policy she held on her 4-year-old daughter, Briajay.

Buckner’s claim, which was paid in full by the insurance provider, included fictitious death claim and medical certificate of death forms. Approximately five months later, Buckner filed another fictitious claim against a $15,000 life insurance policy held on her husband. Buckner claimed her husband had been shot to death while on duty as an FBI agent.

Shortly after Buckner filed the second claim, officials at HSC grew suspicious of Buckner’s claims and launched an internal investigation. HSC turned its findings over to the Aurora Police Department, which contacted the State’s Attorney’s Office. An investigation revealed Buckner’s child died four years earlier, long before Buckner became an employee at HSC. The investigation also revealed that Buckner and her husband, who was not an FBI agent and was unaware of the life insurance policy, were estranged and had not seen each other for months before Buckner began working at HSC.

Bucker was present in court on June 30 when she pled guilty to the charges, but has since failed to appear for any subsequent court proceedings.

Anyone with information regarding Buckner’s whereabouts is urged to contact their local police department or the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office at (630) 407-8000.
